Morning by Morning (7/31/23)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. A theology of God that is neither make nor female but all.
  2. The ways kids think and talk.
  3. Sharing lunchtime and humor with Lindsay, Daniel, Mark, and Penny.
  4. The Bering A Team group, which has worked well together and has great curiosity and process questions and a lovely foundation of vision.
  5. Nedra Smith, and the time I got to share with her on the Bering A Team.
  6. Zahraa Al Lawati, a PICU fellow who i enjoyed working with so much because of her commitment to faith, to science, to healing, and to life generally.
  7. Brock Park Disc Golf course, which was full of good challenge for Stephen and I Sunday.
  8. The story of Jacob.
  9. The taste of cold water on a very hot day.

Morning by Morning (7/20/23)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Sharing that brings relief, comfort, and connection.
  2. Tanya Facio, a CICU RN, and her immensely compassionate work helping a family make the next hard step today.
  3. Shannon Colvin, a pediatric physician whose bubbliness but clear focus and intelligence as a physician has always been wonderful to watch.
  4. Larry Jackson and Terry Bowers and Mike Pennington, men from scouts who taught me so much about camping and hiking and integrity as people.
  5. My brother Joes better health recently.
  6. Pete Awad, a Psi U guy whose courage and strength of character has always been clear and a gift to others.
  7. Feeling a part of the Heart Center Team and their connection to me.
  8. The book, “Home Is Where The Birds Sing.”
  9. Group processing of grief.

Morning by Morning (7/11/23)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Building healthier spiritual and self habits.
  2. Berings P Team announcement about movement towards LGBTQ+ affirmation.
  3. Liz recovering fairly well now.
  4. Jamie Andre, an APP who I have had the opportunity to work with and see her gentleness in care and intelligence in assessment.
  5. Joseph Knadler, one of my favorite CICU attending physicians who conveys trust and confidence with humility, and whose communication style is excellent and clear always.
  6. The intentionality and attention to detail of our CICU RN’s to line changes and well done procedures.
  7. Bringing comfort to a mother who just needed to cry and be distracted for a bit.
  8. Seeing the pics of the Florence reunion crew from 2002 Pepperdine, and seeing their adventures and fun.
  9. Ryan’s bike rides.
  10. Multi colored daisies.
  11. Having replacement lightbulbs available rather than having to go find and buy one.

Morning by Morning (7/9/23)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. The ability to release the past.
  2. Liz being able to see a doctor and try to get well asap.
  3. The TCH pharmacists, many in Legacy Tower who I have had the fortune to meet and build rapport with.
  4. Thos and Krista Skates, the kids of David and Nugget who in their unique ways were more than impactful and kind to me.
  5. Bill and Clara Estes, and their love for kids at Arlington, and Bills excellent children’s lessons.
  6. The exciting down to the wire finishes to both halves for the Dynamo last night. Fun to see and share with Ryan.
  7. My parents increíble ability to keep a well stocked snack area with good nuts, candy, and mixes.
  8. A cool house in the hot summer.
  9. Pizza for breakfast.

Morning by Morning (7/8/23)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. The fragility of life, which makes it even more of a gift.
  2. Sally Jung, one of my favorite nurses ever who carries her logical passionately rational mind with a delightfully dry humor and an appreciation of diversity.
  3. Robyn and Marcus, a good couple to get to know during the run up to my getting married and seeing another couple finding their legs.
  4. The fathers get together with Tim, Mike, Dave, Marcus, Caleb, and Carson before Ryan’s arrival. So much fun with so many stories to keep telling!
  5. Ryan’s really fun 2 tinker crates today- a gimbal plane and a vacuum chamber. I love watching his pride in his work and his love for the science.
  6. PCN’s growth of diverse voices and representation.
  7. Sitting front row on the upper deck of the Dynamo games. Very good seats!
  8. Seeing good zipper merging during my driving today.
  9. Our stomachs, and the amazing job they do with the gut micro biome handling all of our food and breaking them down to what we need.
  10. Jalapeño poppers.

Morning by Morning (7/7/23)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Gods loving embrace, which I feel in meditation.
  2. Virgil Fry, one of my long term mentors and spiritual director and one of those I trust most in this world to see me.
  3. A Heart Center mother who is always so understanding but yet so passionate about seeing her boy as often as possible.
  4. Aiden Hernandez, because he was a really awesome stepson and taught me how to father well.
  5. Bradley and Jenna Barker, a couple I met at Pepperdine who showed what connection and being a couple in love with each other and in love with God could mean.
  6. The needed rain we received in the last 36 hours. Well needed for sure.
  7. The feeling of a child leaning their head on your shoulder.
  8. The In Remembrance emails I send out after a death in our Heart Center, which fill a need and provide support and space for grief and connection.
  9. Sickness, not in itself of course, but for its slowdown of life and reminder of gratitude for ordinary things and normal life.
  10. Having meds in the house for when we are sick.

Morning by Morning (7/4/23)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. Solidarity of people and solidarity of creation, all in connection with God.
  2. Feeling better after a stomach bug after the Mexico trip, but also the luck of being much lighter because of it lol!
  3. Cale, Daniel, Mark, Austin, Michael, Ben, Alexander, and Brandon- some of my friends from Bering who I feel comfortable with.
  4. Making Ryan’s room even more football/soccer centric with player posters today. It’s a step in his development into adolescence!
  5. Organizing things.
  6. Earl and Betty Linder and their overwhelming kindness to me at SWC.
  7. Caleb and Brandy McDaniel, and the many ways they have raised their kids with integrity and personality and passion for learning.
  8. Inside jokes.
  9. Dancing at weddings!

Morning by Morning (7/2/23)

My daily gratitude for:

  1. The sacredness of taking everything in, in silence and curiosity for what is beautiful and sacred and good and challenging at the moment.
  2. A great vacation to share with Liz.
  3. Getting to practice Spanish this past week.
  4. Experiencing the street food of Mexico City this week, including tacos al pastor, pollo barbacoa tacos, huaraches, fried quesadillas, churros, licuado, chocolate drinks, sweet tamales, tamales with peppers and huitlacoche, aguachiles, seafood, among other things.
  5. Great tour guides who let me practice Spanish and wer educated but laidback for street food tour (Clarissa), bike tour (Andrew and Andrea), sacred site tour (Enrigue and Armando), and street art tour (Maria).
  6. Liz’s parents care for our home, dogs, and plants while we were gone.
  7. Dawn healing better and coming home today.
  8. Michell Cosgrove, an RN who I met in PICU and had the pleasure of working with- someone with incredible self reflection and openness and love for the vulnerable.
  9. The smiles of street food vendors.
  10. Adam and Carrie, Jon and Alison, and Cambry and Heather.
  11. The sleep and naps the day after returning from a trip.
  12. The feeling of being settled back in.
